Medea is one of my favorite literary characters. She is a truly spectacular role model. She was High Priestess of Hekate and one of the world's most powerful and knowledgeable Pharmakeia (herbalist witches). She was also wife to Jason of the Argonauts, who left her for another woman. Rather than allowing that to happen, she sent his new wife a cloak that made her flesh melt off and poisoned her own two sons instead of allowing Jason to have them. She knew what she wanted and what she didn't want and did what was necessary to maintain her sovereignty. One of my favorite quotes comes from Medea by Seneca the Younger:
NURSE
[164] The Colchians are no longer on thy side, thy husband’s vows have failed, and there is nothing left of all thy wealth.
MEDEA
[166] Medea, is left – in her thou beholdest sea and land, and sword and fire and gods and thunderbolts.
Medea needs nothing but herself and knows that, even though everything be stripped away, still there stands Medea and she has thunderbolts in her throat.
